CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6— Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10- Skill Focus: Addition and Subtraction Fluency
- Format: 4 pages · 20 problems · Answer key included · PDF
- Best For: End-of-unit review and formative assessment
- Time: 20–30 minutes
What's Inside
This 4-page PDF contains three distinct learning phases designed to scaffold student success. It features 20 total problems, including 5 visual addition tasks with object counting, 5 visual subtraction tasks using the "crossed-out" method, and 10 abstract mixed math puzzles. The layout includes clear section headers, dedicated workspace boxes, and a "Math Star" reward page to celebrate student effort and progress.
Zero-Prep Workflow
- Print: Select "Print All" to generate the 3-page student packet and the 1-page reward sheet in under 30 seconds.
- Distribute: Hand out the packets; students can begin immediately as the visual cues and "Addition Fun!" headers require minimal verbal instruction.
- Review: Use the provided answer key to grade the entire class set in less than 2 minutes, identifying common misconceptions.
Standards Alignment
This resource is centered on CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6, requiring students to demonstrate fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. It also supports CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.1 by using objects and drawings to represent operations. Both standard codes can be copied directly into lesson plans, IEP goals, or district curriculum mapping tools.
How to Use It
Assign this review during the final 20 minutes of a math block to evaluate mastery before a summative test. During the "Subtraction Safari" section, observe if students are counting the remaining objects or using mental strategies; this provides a vital formative-assessment observation tip for identifying who still relies on concrete scaffolds. The final section serves as an excellent check for mental math speed.
Who It's For
Ideal for first-grade students or Kindergarteners ready for advanced computation. It serves as an excellent resource for Title I intervention groups or as a "grab-and-go" packet for substitute teachers. Pair this worksheet with a set of plastic counting bears or a number line anchor chart for students requiring extra tactile support during the more challenging mixed math puzzles.
According to the RAND AIRS 2024 report on elementary mathematics, the transition from concrete representation to abstract fluencies is the most critical juncture in early numeracy development. This addition and subtraction review worksheet implements the "gradual release of responsibility" model by moving students from counting physical icons to solving mental math puzzles within the same instructional session. Research indicates that interleaved practice—mixing addition and subtraction tasks—significantly improves long-term retention compared to blocked practice alone. By requiring 20 distinct operations that vary in difficulty and representation, this resource aligns with best practices for mathematical cognitive load management. The inclusion of a specific reward page mirrors findings that positive reinforcement in lower elementary grades correlates with higher engagement in STEM subjects. Educators using this standard-aligned CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6 tool ensure that learners meet essential benchmarks for fluency and algebraic thinking.
