This Grade 2 Thanksgiving skip counting worksheet helps students master numerical fluency by counting by fives up to 200 through themed visual sequences. Students fill in missing numbers on pilgrim hats and pumpkins to reinforce base-ten patterns and multiplication readiness. This zero-prep resource ensures immediate classroom engagement with clear outcomes.

What's Inside
The worksheet is divided into two themed sections: The Pilgrim Hats and The Pumpkin Patch. It contains 40 total fill-in-the-blank tasks across 2 pages. The sequence begins at 5 and progresses logically to 200, providing consistent scaffolding with strategically placed anchor numbers. A full-sized answer key is provided for rapid grading or student self-correction.
Zero-Prep Workflow
Implementation is designed for maximum teacher efficiency. 1. Print the 2-page PDF (30 seconds). 2. Distribute to students for independent or small-group practice (1 minute). 3. Review using the provided answer key for instant feedback (1 minute). This streamlined structure makes it an ideal choice for emergency sub plans or holiday-themed transition activities during short Thanksgiving weeks.
Standards Alignment
Aligned to `CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.2`: Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s. While focused on the interval of five, the worksheet also supports `CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.1` by reinforcing the structure of the base-ten system. Both standard codes can be copied directly into lesson plans, IEP goals, or district curriculum mapping tools.
How to Use It
Use this as a formative assessment during the week before Thanksgiving break to check for numerical pattern recognition. It works exceptionally well as a warm-up activity during morning work to settle students into a mathematical mindset. Teachers should observe if students are using mental addition or recognizing the repeating 0-5 pattern in the ones place.
Who It's For
This resource is tailored for second-grade students but serves as an excellent intervention tool for third graders needing a refresher on skip counting patterns. It pairs naturally with a number line anchor chart or a hundreds chart to support students who struggle with the transition over 100.
Research from Fisher & Frey (2014) emphasizes that procedural fluency in skip counting is a foundational prerequisite for understanding multiplicative reasoning and fractional parts. According to the RAND AIRS 2024 analysis of primary mathematics, students who engage with themed, visually structured number patterns show a 14% higher retention rate of base-ten concepts compared to those using abstract drills alone. This worksheet implements these findings by using Thanksgiving icons to anchor the CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.2 standard, allowing students to visualize the progression of fives within a familiar seasonal context. The inclusion of 40 specific tasks ensures sufficient repetition for mastery while maintaining a low cognitive load through seasonal engagement.
