This skip counting by fives to 100 worksheet helps second-grade students master number patterns and base-ten concepts. By filling in missing numbers in a sequence, learners strengthen their mental math fluency and prepare for multiplication. This resource provides a clear, structured path for students to visualize and internalize the relationship between numerical increments of five.

What's Inside
The worksheet features 20 hand-shaped graphic organizers arranged in a 4x5 grid, with each hand representing the value of five. Students are presented with a sequence where several values, such as 15, 45, 55, and 100, are already provided as anchors. The single-page layout is designed for clarity, including a comprehensive answer key for rapid grading or student self-correction.
Zero-Prep Workflow
This resource follows a streamlined zero-prep workflow to maximize instructional efficiency. Teachers can print the document in less than 30 seconds, distribute it to the class immediately, and review student work using the provided answer key in under one minute. This makes the worksheet an ideal candidate for unexpected sub plans, early finisher activities, or transition period fillers.
Standards Alignment
This activity aligns primarily with CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.2, which requires students to count within 1000 and specifically skip-count by 5s. Mastery of this standard is a critical precursor to understanding the five-times table and telling time to the nearest five minutes. Both standard codes can be copied directly into lesson plans, IEP goals, or district curriculum mapping tools.
How to Use It
Use this worksheet as a formative assessment after introducing skip counting to identify students who struggle with crossing decades, such as moving from 45 to 50. Alternatively, assign it as a morning work task to reinforce number sense during the first few minutes of the school day. Educators should observe if students use their fingers or identify the digit patterns in the ones place.
Who It's For
This material is tailored for Grade 2 students but serves as excellent enrichment for advanced first graders or intervention support for third graders. It pairs naturally with an interactive hundreds chart or a physical number line to provide visual scaffolding. The repetitive nature of the task supports English Language Learners by reinforcing mathematical vocabulary through numerical patterns.
According to a RAND AIRS 2024 analysis of instructional materials, skip counting serves as a foundational bridge between simple addition and the conceptual leap required for multiplicative reasoning. The ability to skip-count by fives specifically aligns with cognitive development benchmarks for Grade 2 students, as identified in the EdReports 2024 framework for mathematical rigor. By focusing on increments of five, students internalize the rhythmic nature of the base-ten system, which facilitates faster computation in multi-digit addition and subtraction. Research by Fisher & Frey (2014) emphasizes that repetitive, scaffolded practice with number sequences allows students to offload basic counting tasks to long-term memory, freeing up cognitive resources for complex problem-solving. This worksheet provides that essential practice, ensuring that the standard CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.2 is not just introduced but mastered through consistent application of skip-counting principles in a classroom setting.
