What's Inside
This five-page assessment packet contains nine distinct task types, ranging from simple counting exercises to basic addition and subtraction problems. It includes visual comparison activities, number-word matching, and shape identification sections. The layout is clean and spacious, minimizing cognitive load for young learners, and a full answer key is provided for efficient grading and feedback.
Mastery Evidence
Each of the nine tasks is mapped directly to foundational standards, allowing for a clear progression from basic recognition to independent problem-solving. The varying task formats—including circling, drawing, and writing—allow students to demonstrate mastery through multiple modalities. Teachers can use these results to identify specific gaps in numeracy or geometric understanding, making it an essential tool for IEP progress notes and data-driven instruction.
Standards Alignment
The primary focus is CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4, which requires students to understand the relationship between numbers and quantities. It also supports CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.1 by introducing basic addition and subtraction with visual supports. Both standard codes can be copied directly into lesson plans, IEP goals, or district curriculum mapping tools.
How to Use It
Assign this exam at the end of the first term to gauge retention of core math concepts. It serves as an excellent summative assessment for Kindergarten or a diagnostic tool for Grade 1 students. For best results, read the instructions aloud to students while allowing them to work independently on the visual tasks. Use the results to form small groups for targeted remediation.
Who It's For
Designed for Kindergarten and early Grade 1 students, this resource is perfect for classroom teachers, homeschooling parents, and special education providers. It pairs naturally with hands-on manipulatives or counting blocks during direct instruction review sessions.
According to the RAND AIRS 2024 report, high-quality assessment tools that integrate multiple numeracy domains—such as counting, operations, and geometry—are critical for identifying early learning gaps and ensuring long-term mathematical success. This Math Transition Exam aligns with these findings by providing a balanced review of CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4 standards through visual and symbolic tasks. By utilizing varied item types, the assessment captures a holistic view of student cardinality and algebraic thinking. Fisher & Frey (2014) emphasize that such frequent, structured feedback loops in the primary grades significantly improve student outcomes. This resource provides the necessary scaffolding for young learners to demonstrate their understanding of quantities and basic operations in a classroom-ready format.
