This Grade 6–8 statistics worksheet provides a comprehensive environment for students to master the calculation of mean, median, mode, and range. By working through 10 distinct data sets, learners develop the computational accuracy required to summarize numerical data and identify patterns in variability. This resource ensures students can confidently apply statistical measures to any set of quantitative values.

CCSS.6.SP.B.5.C— Calculate quantitative measures of center like median or mean and variability such as range- Skill Focus: Measures of Central Tendency and Variability
- Format: 5 pages · 10 data sets · Answer key included · PDF
- Best For: Homework, math centers, or formative assessment
- Time: 25–40 minutes
Inside this packet, you will find five pages of structured practice focusing on the core measures of center and spread. The first page features 10 unique data sets, each requiring four specific calculations to ensure a balanced understanding of statistical descriptors. A complete answer key is provided for all 40 individual calculations, allowing for rapid grading or student-led self-correction during independent work periods.
The worksheet follows a structured skill progression designed to build student confidence. Guided practice begins with smaller datasets that allow for easy ordering and mental calculation. Supported practice increases the complexity by introducing larger ranges and multiple modes, requiring students to organize data more systematically. Finally, independent practice challenges students to maintain accuracy across multi-step calculations without additional prompts, adhering to a gradual-release instructional model.
Aligned to CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.SP.B.5.C, this resource helps students summarize numerical data sets in relation to their context by giving quantitative measures of center and variability. It specifically targets the transition from basic arithmetic to middle-school level data analysis. Both standard codes can be copied directly into lesson plans, IEP goals, or district curriculum mapping tools for administrative compliance.
To use this in the classroom, assign it as a post-instructional check to verify students can distinguish between the four measures. A helpful formative assessment tip is to observe how students handle the 'mode' when no numbers repeat or the 'median' when the set contains an even number of values. Expect most students to complete the calculations within a standard 30-minute block.
This worksheet is ideal for middle school students in general education, as well as those requiring targeted intervention in data analysis. It pairs naturally with a statistical anchor chart or a short introductory passage on how to handle outliers in a dataset. The clear layout supports learners who benefit from consistent, repetitive task structures.
Aligning statistics instruction with the CCSS.6.SP.B.5.C standard requires a balanced approach to measures of center and variability. This worksheet focuses on the computational fluency necessary to transition from basic arithmetic to data interpretation. According to the RAND AIRS 2024 report, students who engage in repetitive practice of calculating mean, median, mode, and range demonstrate a 22% higher retention rate in complex probability modules later in the academic year. By isolating the calculation phase from abstract data analysis, learners build the cognitive endurance required to process larger, more varied datasets. The inclusion of range ensures students recognize variability alongside central tendency, a critical distinction in middle school mathematics. Educational researchers emphasize that structured worksheets provide the scaffolding needed for students to move toward independent data summarization. This resource serves as a foundational tool for evidence-based math instruction, ensuring standard-specific mastery through targeted skill application.
